The natural rock arch of Needle Hole Point on a cliff edge near Kate’s Point, Mahabaleshwar

Kate’s Point & Needle Hole

Two reservoirs, one rock arch

On the eastern rim of the plateau, about 6–7 km from the bazaar, two viewpoints sit almost side by side. Kate’s Point — traditionally said to be named after the daughter of Sir John Malcolm, the Governor of Bombay who founded the hill station — looks east over the Krishna valley, with the reservoirs of Dhom and Balkawadi shining far below.

A short walk along the cliff brings you to Needle Hole Point, also called Elephant’s Head Point: a rock buttress that, from the right angle, looks like an elephant’s head and trunk, with a natural hole — the needle’s eye — punched right through it. It is one of the most photographed rocks in Maharashtra.

Top things to do at Kate’s Point & Needle Hole

Look down on the Krishna valley

From Kate’s Point the young Krishna river, which rises in Old Mahabaleshwar, winds east towards Wai. The two reservoirs catch the light beautifully in the late afternoon.

Photograph the needle’s eye

The best view of Needle Hole is from the small ledge just before it, with the valley visible through the gap. Stay on the marked path — the rock around it is steep and loose.

Continue to Lodwick Point

If you still have energy, the older Lodwick Point, with its memorial column to General Lodwick, is on the western side of the plateau and makes a good add-on to the same half-day.

Insider tips

  • Late afternoon is best for Kate’s Point, when the sun is behind you and the reservoirs glow.
  • In the monsoon the views often vanish in cloud, but the waterfalls on the opposite cliffs make up for it on clear spells.
  • Snack stalls here sell corn, chana and chai — and the monkeys know it.
  • Weekends in April, May and Diwali are busy; weekdays are far calmer.
