Mahabaleshwar sits on a flat-topped plateau at roughly 1,350 m, and almost every famous “point” is a place where that plateau simply ends. Arthur’s Seat is the most spectacular of them. The road runs out along a spine of rock about 12 km west of the bazaar, and at the tip the ground falls hundreds of metres into the Savitri valley, which drains west through the Konkan to the Arabian Sea.
The point takes its name from Arthur Malet, an early British resident who, the local story goes, used to sit here looking out towards the coast where he had lost his family at sea. Whether or not the tale is true, it is the viewpoint every taxi driver will insist you see — and they are right. Go early, before the valley mist lifts and the tour cars arrive.
Top things to do at Arthur’s Seat
Walk out to the tip
Several railed platforms step down the ridge. The lower ones give the classic view of the Savitri gorge on one side and the Jor valley on the other — the contrast between the dry, open west and the forested east is one of the reasons the spot is famous.
Stop at Echo Point and Tiger Spring
On the path towards the main point you pass Echo Point, where children shout into the gorge, and Tiger Spring, a small spring in the rock. Nearby Window Point frames the valley through the trees.
Combine it with Elphinstone Point
The road to Arthur’s Seat passes the turn-off for Elphinstone Point and Malcolm Point. Most taxi “point tours” do all three in one loop of two to three hours.

How to get to Arthur’s Seat
- From the bazaar: around 12 km by road, 25–35 minutes. There is no public bus; take a local taxi (they run fixed-rate point tours) or drive yourself — parking is by the entrance.
- From Pune or Mumbai on a day trip: the guided Mahabaleshwar–Panchgani day trips from Pune include Arthur’s Seat in their itinerary.
- On foot: the final approach from the car park is a short walk on paved and stepped paths, with some uneven sections.
Insider tips
- Arrive before 09:00. By late morning the valley often fills with haze and the car park with vehicles.
- In the monsoon (June–September) you may see nothing but cloud — and the approach road can be closed after heavy rain. Ask locally before setting out.
- Keep snacks out of sight: bonnet macaques at the viewpoints are bold and quick.
- Stay behind the railings. The edges are sheer, crumbly laterite and there are no second chances.
