The sun rising over layered hills seen from Wilson Point, Mahabaleshwar

Wilson Point

Sunrise from the top of the plateau

Wilson Point is the highest spot in Mahabaleshwar — a little over 1,400 m — and the best-known place to watch the sunrise, which is why it is also called Sunrise Point. It is named after Sir Leslie Wilson, Governor of Bombay in the 1920s, and sits just a couple of kilometres from the main market.

The broad, grassy top is crowned by old stone bastions that work as viewing towers. From them you look east and south over the rolling plateau and, on clear mornings, the ridges of the Sahyadri stacked one behind another towards the horizon.

Top things to do at Wilson Point

Watch the sunrise

Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise, climb one of the bastions and watch the light spread across the hills. Between October and February the air is usually clearest.

Walk back to town

It is an easy downhill walk back to the bazaar, where early-opening stalls serve chai, poha and bun maska — a very Mahabaleshwar breakfast.

Pair it with Venna Lake

Wilson Point and Venna Lake are both close to the market, so you can do sunrise here and a morning boat ride before the crowds.

How to get to Wilson Point

  • From the bazaar: about 1.5–2 km; a short taxi ride or a 25–30-minute uphill walk.
  • By car: the approach road goes almost to the top; parking space is limited on weekend mornings.
  • Before dawn: arrange a taxi the evening before — few cars wait for fares that early.

Insider tips

  • Bring a warm layer: even in April it can be cool before sunrise, and in December–January it is genuinely cold.
  • A torch or phone light helps on the uneven steps up the bastions in the dark.
  • In the monsoon the top is usually wrapped in cloud; save sunrise for the drier months.
  • Sunset is decent here too, but Elphinstone Point and Bombay (Sunset) Point are better for it.
