The dark basalt stepped roof of a temple in Old Mahabaleshwar

Old Mahabaleshwar & the Krishna source

Where five rivers are born

About 6 km north of the modern town lies Kshetra Mahabaleshwar, the pilgrimage village that gave the hill station its name. Its Mahabaleshwar temple, dedicated to Shiva, is traditionally dated to the 16th century and the Chandrarao More family; inside is a swayambhu (self-manifested) lingam, and the building is a fine example of the dark basalt Hemadpanti style of the Deccan.

A few steps away is the Panchganga temple, where water flows from a carved cow’s mouth (gomukh) into a tank. Tradition holds that five rivers — the Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri and Gayatri — rise here together, which makes this spot the symbolic source of the Krishna, one of the great rivers of peninsular India. Just above, the Krishnabai temple looks out over the Krishna valley.

Top things to do at Old Mahabaleshwar & the Krishna source

Visit the Mahabaleshwar temple

Remove your shoes at the entrance, dress modestly and join the line for darshan of the lingam. Mondays, the month of Shravan and Mahashivratri are the busiest days.

In the Panchganga temple, watch the water spill from the stone gomukh into the sacred tank. Photography rules vary inside shrines — ask before you shoot.

Walk down to the Krishnabai temple

A short, rough path leads to this beautiful black-stone temple on the plateau edge, with carved pillars and a view straight down the Krishna valley. It is quieter than the main temples and wonderful in soft morning light.
