A carpet of purple and pink wildflowers on the Kaas Plateau after the monsoon

Kaas Plateau

Maharashtra’s valley of flowers

The Kaas Plateau (Kaas Pathar) is a laterite plateau at about 1,200 m, roughly 25 km west of Satara. For most of the year it looks like bare grassland on rock. Then, after the monsoon, a thin layer of soil and water on the basalt explodes into flower: carpets of pink balsams, purple bladderworts, white and yellow blooms, many of them found only in the Western Ghats.

Kaas is part of the Western Ghats UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2012, and is managed by the forest department and local committees. To protect it, visitor numbers are capped in the flowering season and tickets are sold online in advance. The bloom is weather-dependent, but typically runs from late August to early October, peaking in September.

Top things to do at Kaas Plateau

Walk the flower trails

Stay on the marked paths and boardwalks — the plants are tiny and easily crushed. A macro lens or a phone with a close-up mode will reward you.

Visit Kaas Lake

A few kilometres on, Kaas Lake is a pretty reservoir fringed with forest, good for a picnic stop on the way back.

Add Thoseghar or Vajrai falls

Two of Maharashtra’s tallest waterfalls, Thoseghar and Vajrai, are within reach of Kaas and are at their best in the same season.

How to get to Kaas Plateau

  • From Mahabaleshwar: roughly 2–2.5 hours by road via Satara; start early to be on the plateau by mid-morning.
  • From Satara: about 25 km, 45 minutes to an hour on a narrow hill road.
  • From Pune: about 130–140 km; many Pune travel agents run seasonal day trips.

Insider tips

  • Book your Kaas entry slot online as soon as bookings open for the season — weekends sell out.
  • Visit on a weekday if at all possible; weekend traffic on the plateau road can be severe.
  • Carry rain gear: showers are common even in late September.
  • Do not pick flowers or walk off the paths; fines apply and the ecosystem is fragile.
