Lingmala Falls

The monsoon waterfall

Lingmala Falls is where a stream from the plateau leaps off the escarpment into the Venna valley, a few kilometres from Mahabaleshwar town. The main drop is long and narrow, often described as well over a hundred metres, and in full monsoon it is joined by dozens of temporary cascades pouring off the surrounding cliffs.

The falls are a seasonal pleasure. From about July to October they are at their most impressive; through the winter the flow drops steadily, and by April and May there may be little more than a thread of water. A walk through the forest from the roadside entrance leads to viewpoints and to a smaller fall with a pool upstream.

Top things to do at Lingmala Falls

Walk the forest trail

The path from the entrance runs through shady forest to viewpoints over the main fall. Allow about an hour there and back including stops.

See the upper pool

Upstream of the main drop, a smaller fall splashes into a rock pool. Swimming is not advisable — the rocks are slippery and the current strong after rain.

Look for the monsoon cascades

On clear breaks during the rains, the whole Venna valley wall streams with waterfalls. The views from the Panchgani road and the ghat are superb.

How to get to Lingmala Falls

  • From the bazaar: roughly 5–6 km, 15 minutes by taxi, just off the Mahabaleshwar–Panchgani road.
  • Entry: the site is managed by the forest department and a small entry fee is normally collected.
  • Access: the trail can be closed in very heavy rain; ask your hotel before going.

Insider tips

  • Wear shoes with real grip — laterite and moss are treacherous when wet.
  • Go in the morning: afternoon cloud often hides the valley in the monsoon.
  • Do not climb on rocks near the edge for photos. Accidents happen here most years.
  • Carry out all litter — the forest here is part of a protected landscape.
